Testing process
What a backflow test checks—and what happens next
Understand the field test, the difference between pass and filing, how tester eligibility works, and why the utility controls the final requirement.
A field test measures whether the testable assembly's checks, relief function, or air-inlet behavior meets the applicable procedure. A passing result may still need to be submitted and accepted.
Do not use a national page to assume that your property is due. Confirm the utility, device record, and notice.

Turn observations into a next step
This narrows the route. It does not replace an on-site test, manufacturer instructions, or local requirements.
Evidence sequence
Move in this order
- 01
Confirm the assembly and due status
Match the service address, device ID, utility, and due date.
- 02
Use an eligible tester
Check both professional certification and any utility registration, list, or portal requirement.
- 03
Run the field procedure
The tester records device-specific readings and a pass or fail result.
- 04
Close the record
Confirm the accepted report, required fee, and any repair/retest follow-up.
Identification notes
What to look for
- Due status: notice, device record, anniversary, or utility schedule.
- Tester gate: certification alone may not equal utility approval.
- Closeout: the utility may require a portal, form, fee, or tester submission.
Safe observations
What you can check without taking it apart
- Keep the notice and prior report.
- Ask who files the result.
- Ask whether the quote includes filing fees and retest.
- Save acceptance confirmation.
Stop conditions
Move to qualified help when
- A provider cannot show the required credential
- The notice utility and property utility do not match
- A failed device is being treated as complete after repair only
- The report route is an unofficial look-alike site
Boundary check
Do not confuse this path with
- An inspection is not always the same as a formal testable-assembly procedure.
- A tester directory is not automatically an approved list.
- Passing in the field is not always the same as accepted by the utility.
Official local layer
Your utility sets the rule
The governing utility defines who must test, when, which tester is accepted, and how the report is filed.
